You know your zodiac sign. Maybe you check your horoscope on Monday mornings, or maybe you just know you're a Scorpio because everyone keeps telling you it shows. Where Western astrology tracks planets against constellations, Saju pins your birth moment onto a cycle of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches from the East Asian lunisolar calendar. Different machinery. Same human question: who am I, and what's coming next?
Start with the zodiac parallel. Western astrology gives you twelve signs tied to the sun's yearly path. Saju uses twelve Earthly Branches (地支), each with an animal: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig. Your birth year picks your animal, sure. But Saju doesn't stop there. It assigns a branch to your month, your day, and your hour. Four data points instead of one.
That's the real difference in granularity. Your Western sun sign is a single coordinate. Your Saju chart is eight characters (팔자): four pillars, each pairing a Heavenly Stem with an Earthly Branch. It's closer to having a sun sign, moon sign, rising sign, and a few more placements all rolled into one framework. The Day Master (일간), the stem of your birth day, plays the role your sun sign plays. Core identity. Ego. The "you" underneath everything.
The elements differ too. Western astrology works with four: Fire, Earth, Air, Water. Saju works with five (오행): Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water. Adding Metal and Wood creates a richer cycle of generation and control. A Saju chart heavy in Fire but starved of Water reads as imbalanced. A Western chart loaded with fire signs and no water signs might say something similar, just less precisely.
Here's where the two traditions really diverge in purpose. Western astrology leans psychological. "Scorpios are intense. Libras seek balance." Saju leans practical. Korean practitioners focus on timing: when to launch a business, when to marry, which years carry wealth and which carry hardship. The Ten Gods (십신) system maps relationships between elements in your chart and predicts career paths, relationship dynamics, wealth cycles. Specificity that sun-sign columns don't attempt.
Compatibility readings show the gap too. Western synastry overlays two natal charts, checking how your Mars hits their Venus. Korean 궁합 (gunghap) compares elemental balance between two Saju charts. Does your partner's Water feed your Wood, or does their Metal chop it? Same question, different calculus.
Look, neither system is science. Treat both as mirrors for self-reflection, not prophecy.
